Own Property? Helpful Tips For How To Hire The Right Handyman

Whether you own a single-family home or an entire apartment building it is vital that you have a handyman on deck. You just never know when something will break down in one of the units and your tenants will need assistance getting it fixed. This is an important job because if you don't hire the right handyman you risk having your name smeared by disgruntled tenants. They can very easily hop online and write a scathing review that makes it nearly impossible for you to find new tenants. Here are a few tips to help you hire the handyman that's going to be a good fit for you.

Availability Is The Name Of The Game

If the stove has gone out in one of your units it needs to be fixed right away. The tenants shouldn't have to wait days or weeks on end before the handyman comes out to take care of it. If you choose someone who doesn't have adequate availability it could mean that the stove remains broken for much longer than it should be.

Look for a handyman who understands the importance of availability. You can figure this out by asking many different questions. Do they have small children that they have to watch at night? Do they have a Smartphone that they check on a frequent basis? Are they willing to be on call twenty-four hours a day? All of these questions can help you determine if the person you're interviewing is going to be available to work when you need them to be.

Always Check Their Work

Just like you would check the references provided by someone who wanted to be your administrative assistant you should also check the work of a handyman. That is their physical resume and it will give you an idea of the scope of their experience.

It can be something as simple as asking them to install a ceiling fan in a room on the property. Pay them for the job and let them know that it's a test to see not only if they're able to do it but how long it takes. Pick other small jobs that come up on a regular basis and ask the handyman if they would be willing to take care of them for a fee.

You want the handyman that you choose to stick around for a long time. If you select the right one you're sure to develop a mutually beneficial relationship.
