How To Install A Laminate Backsplash

Laminate is a common material for countertops, and it also makes an inexpensive and easy to clean backsplash option for your kitchen remodeling project. Laminate can be installed on drywall, but not directly with glue, since adhesive need a smooth, dry surface to bond.

It is possible to install a laminate backsplash on drywall by adding a particle board or plywood backing. Install a laminate backsplash by following this guide.

Prepare to Install the Backsplash

To install the backsplash. gather:

  • work gloves and safety glasses
  • tape measure
  • liquid dish soap
  • tack cloth
  • 180-grit sandpaper
  • paper or cardboard
  • wood clamps and saw horses
  • utility knife or laminate shears
  • construction adhesive and contact cement
  • paint brush
  • roller
  • router and 3/8 inch trim bit
  • water-resistant caulk
  • hardwood or particle board
  • laminate

Work in a ventilated area to avoid breathing fumes. Sand the area to remove imperfections, if needed. Scrub the backsplash with a sponge and liquid dish soap, rinse, then let it dry.

Place a large sheet of paper or cardboard over the area, mark the length and width, then cut the template to use for cutting the laminate to size. Adjust the template as needed until you get the precise measurements.

Cut the Boards

Lay the boards separately across two saw horses, sand to smooth the surfaces, then clean sand dust with a tack cloth. Spread the template across the board, and outline the shape on the surface. Secure the board to the saw horse with clamps leaving room for the router, and cut the shape using the router and 3/8 inch bit.

Use  laminate shears or a utility knife to trim the corners. Laminate shears cost more, but they give smoother cuts. Repeat the process to cut the laminate board. If you don't prefer to cut the boards yourself, get them cut at a hardware store.

Install the Boards

Spread contact cement on both boards separately, and let the cement cure twenty minutes. Both surfaces should be dry before applying the glue. Lay the laminate on the backing board, and gently use the mallet to tap both boards to complete the bond.

Add two layers construction adhesive on the edges of the backsplash, then press it in place on the wall. If you accidentally place it crooked, use acetone to remove the glue.

Once the backsplash is in place, go over it with a roller to smooth bubbles. Apply a bead of caulk to where the backsplash  around the edges where the backsplash meets the countertop and where the countertop meets the wall. Allow the caulk and glue to dry completely.
